Ookal lijkt ’t misschien eenzijdige communicatie, dit schrijven van een blog, (blog staat voor website log, dus dagboek bijgehouden op een internet site) maar toch krijgen we elke keer weer leuke reacties op de site. Op mijn laatste 'notes' kreeg ik bijvoorbeeld verschillende tips voor het verantwoordelijk uitmoorden van hele stammen luizen die mijn planten het leven moeilijk maken. Bedankt voor jullie reacties!
Maar goed, even terug naar de titel. Wat ík eigenlijk doe voor de kost.
Leven in de Franse campagne is leuk, maar er moet natuurlijk wel brood op de plank blijven komen, en leem voor tussen de muren. Gelukkig hebben we via de ADSL een supersnelle verbinding met de rest van de wereld en kan Perry zijn diensten leveren via zijn onderneming La Baguette Magique. Eigenlijk is daarmee zijn werkwens gerealiseerd. Namelijk, werken zonder kilometers af te leggen in de file, vanuit je eigen omgeving, in de plek die we uitkozen om te wonen.
Perry is momenteel de enige kostwinner in ons huishouden. Alles komt letterlijk en figuurlijk van zijn hand. Leuke websites, brochures, illustraties etc. Dus vaak wordt er gevraagd “en wat doet Caroline dan?”
Tja, helaas zijn de resultaten van mijn werk niet echt te zien. Dat is vaak zo als men “achter de schermen” werkt. Eigenlijk kun je ervan uitgaan dat ik alles doe behalve creativiteit met pen en computer. Ik zal er verder niet over uitweiden, want voor de meesten is het dan duidelijk dat dit betekent: reilen en zeilen van huis, tuin en keuken, privé- en werkadministratie, organisatie van projecten rondom huis en schuren, correspondentie n.a.v. onze site reacties en ga zo maar door.
Gelukkig kunnen we taken zo verdelen, want je moet vooral doen waar je goed in bent. Of dit bevredigend is, is natuurlijk de vraag. Vooralsnog hou ik mezelf voor dat we in de opstartfase zijn en dat het over een tijdje meer op rolletjes zal lopen en ik dus ook meer andere (eigen) dingen kan gaan doen.
Momenteel geef ik tussen de bedrijven door wel privé-les. Het is een uitzondering, want voor hondentraining heb ik momenteel helemaal geen tijd. Maar dit pupje verdient een goede start en samen met zijn baasjes zijn we bezig om hem een goed gesocialiseerde en wel opgevoede hond te laten zijn. Heerlijk om het canine leven weer even te voelen!
OK, ik moet weer gaan, ik moet de was ophangen.

I’m straying from the title ...
Living in the French campagne is nice, but we have to make a living as well. We need bread on the table and clay for the walls. We are very lucky to have ADSL for a super-fast connection with the world. It is thus easy for Perry to provide his services through his enterprise, La Baguette Magique. In fact, this connection fulfilled all we hoped for when setting out to live and work in rural France. It’s possible for him to work without the commute, and from his own space in the house our garden.
Perry is the breadwinner in our household at present. Everything literally and figuratively comes out of his hands; great websites, brochures, illustrations, and so on. Because his work is tangible and visible, people ask me what I contribute.
Hmm, well, the results of my hours are not visible. That is often the case when one works behind the scenes. Basically, I do everything apart from being creative with pen and computer.
I will spare you the details, since for most of you it might be clear what that means, lock stock and barrel of house, garden, kitchen. The administration, both private and work, correspondence with reference to the site, business and social.
We are fortunate that we can share our tasks this way, chaqu’un son metier! Whether or not this division of labour is satisfying remains to be seen. For now, I see it as a perfect start-up situation and eventually I will have time to start work for myself.
At present I am giving private dog training lessons. It is a one-off, because I simply don’t have enough time. But this pup deserves a good start and his owners and I are working hard at creating a well-socialised and trained dog. It is very nice to taste a little of the canine world again.
OK, gotta go. Have to hang out the washing.
